This weeks Friday feature artist is also the winner of the BBC Sound of 2014. Yes that’s right, the thing I have been banging on about for the past 2 months now has a winner… Sam Smith. The young man (21) from a tiny village in Cambridgeshire has already featured on two of last years biggest tracks, Disclosures dance-pop hit Latch and Naughty Boy’s number one single La La La.
Usually winning this is a very good thing for the old pop CV. It’s only been proved by last years winners HAIM as well as past winners, Adele, Florence and the Machine and so on… Sam has a lovely voice which can reach some seriously high notes as proved on his first single, ‘Money On My Mind’ which is about the crazy world of the record industry and all the money that’s involved. A little protest song if you will. Smith was also named the winner of the Critics’ Choice award by the Brits, which is another fantastic credit to add to his plethora of praise.
He adds to the great selection of British musicians that look to be taking hold of this years radio playlists. Greg Cochrane, editor of NME.com said: “If the top five in this year’s Sound Of is anything to go by, it’s going to be a strong year for innovative young solo artists. “It’s particularly exciting that four of the five are British, too. 2013 wasn’t a brilliant year for UK artists translating buzz into sales, so the industry will be hoping these artists really capture music fans’ imaginations.” Go have a listen and also have a very good weekend!
